After attempting many routes toward publication of my first novel, Be Prepared to Die. Ultimately, the publishing company I chose to work with limited my control over the cover design, interior formatting, and the finished book quality. These aspects of creation have been commodified by far too many in the publishing industry, purely for profit. It would not be so egregious if they didn’t charge such exorbitant fees for their services, but independent authors and creators should not have to endure such predatory business practices. I learned much from that experience though, and even more in the months that have followed, since the release of my book in late Summer of 2023. And unlike the influencers and digital entrepreneurs that have bombarded my social media accounts with promises to make me the next best selling author, I have no interest being a capitalist leech.
After receiving my finished book from the publishing company, I knew I would need to design and format the book myself for it to appear and read as I had envisioned and intended. With a background in design and photography I decided to create the cover I wanted and re-format the interior. I've designed the samples below with the use of my own photographs and AI generated images, and formatted the interiors using the book formatting software Atticus.
